Call Before You Dig !

Anytime you plan to dig, drill or blast in Deahdorse, please call us at 907-659-2236 to schedule a gas line locate.  We ask that you schedule a locate 2 days before starting your work.  Most times we can provide immediate assistance.  Hand digging or exposing gas lines with a vacuum truck are recommended within 2' of all locate marks.  If you are excavating on your pad, you may have privately owned gas lines downstream of the gas meter.  We will be glad to assist you in locating your gas lines, however, we cannot guarantee their accuracy as we have no records of where these lines are located.  Don't forget to call the other Deadhorse utilities to schedule locates of their facilities.

Access to Gas Meters

For your safety, access to the gas meters located at your facility must be maintained at all times.  We periodically do leak tests, leak surveys, and adjust regulator pressures that require access to the meter sets.  You should inspect the area around your gas meter regularly, especially during snowy and windy conditions.  You are responsible for keeping your gas meter and pressure regulator free of ice and snow,  If Norgasco has to clear snow or other obstructions from the meter set, you will be charged according to our current labor rates.

Properties of our Natural Gas

Natural gas is odorless, colorless, tasteless, and lighter than air. To protect your safety, odorant is added to the gas to give it a noticeable, unpleasant odor.  Unlike propane, natural gas will rise if there is an unintentional release of natural gas and will dissipate to the atmosphere.  Here are some important properties of the natural gas distributed in the Deadhorse area:
  • Lighter than Air, Density is .72
  • Typical Chemical Composition of natural gas in the Norgasco system:
    • 80% Methane
    • 12% Carbon dioxide
    • 5% Ethane
    • 3% other heavy hydrocarbons
  • May contain trace amounts of Hydrogen Sulfide
  • Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) about 5% natural gas in air
  • Upper Explosive Limit (UEL) about 15% natural gas in air
  • Ignition temperature approximately 1100 degrees F
  • Heat Content is 940 BTU/cubic ft

How to Recognize a Gas Leak

How to recognize a natural gas leak:
  • Smells like rotten eggs
  • Look for discolored vegetation or bubbles in water
  • Listen for hissing or loud roar
What to do in case of a gas leak:
  • Leave the area immediately
  • Call Norgasco at 907-659-2236
  • DO NOT use a phone near a leak, light a match or turn a light switch on or off.  Call Norgasco from a phone away from the building.
  • Call emergency responders if property or life are in danger.
  • A Norgasco technician will respond quickly.

What to do if you damage a gas line

If you damage a gas line, call Norgasco's 24 hour phone number 907-659-2236.  Call Norgasco at any time a line is broken, scraped, pulled, cut or otherwise damaged.  If the damage results in a release of natural gas and there is danger to life or property, you should call the Fire Department.  Eliminate all ignition sources and evacuate the area of the damage.  Wait for a Norgasco technician to shut off the flow of gas and make repairs.  Norgasco service lines are NOT equipped with Excess Flow Valves (EFV's) due to the size and variability of the industrial load.  If a service line is broken, natural gas will flow until a Norgasco technician can stop the flow of gas.

Adding natural gas heaters or other gas  equipment?

Picture
Please Notify us when you plan any equipment upgrades, addition of equipment, or change in gas piping so we can make sure the regulator and meter are sized properly.  Failure to do so could result in inefficient operation or damage to equipment.  Please consult the National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54) and the Uniform Plumbing and Uniform Mechanical Codes when adding piping, ventilation, or gas equipment.

Customer Owned Gas Piping

Generally, all gas piping downstream of the Norgasco gas meter belongs to the customer.  The customer is responsible for maintaining and protecting the integrity of all pipe downstream of the meter.  The pipe may be above ground or buried and is the sole responsibility of the customer.  If customer owned buried pipe is not maintained, it may be subject to the potential hazards of corrosion and leakage.  Customer owned buried steel gas piping should be periodically checked for leaks, and inspected for corrosion.  Any pipe found unsafe must be repaired immediately.  When excavating near any buried gas piping, the piping should be located ahead of time and exposed by hand shoveling.  Customers are responsible for installation and maintenance of gas appliances, heaters and gas operated equipment downstream of the gas meter.

Keep your Vents Free of Ice and Snow

Picture
One of the combustion products of natural gas is water vapor which, in Deadhorse, means ice. Visually inspect exhaust vents from your natural gas equipment to make sure there is no ice buildup which could restrict the flow from the vent.

Meter Protection

Picture

Your gas meter must be protected from physical damage.  Bollards or barricades must be installed to protect the gas meter.  We can assist you with the appropriate design of bollards and barricades.  All equipment operators should know the locations of gas meters and take every precaution to avoid damaging them when plowing or operating equipment on your pad.

Excess Flow
Valves

Excess Flow Valves are buried valves that will automatically shut off the flow of natural gas if a service line is damaged. Norgaasco service lines are NOT equipped with Excess Flow Valves (EFV's) due to the size and variability of the industrial loads. If a service line is broken, natural gas will flow until a Norgasco technician can close a manual valve to stop the flow of gas. Effective April 2017, Federal regulations require Norgasco to offer customers the option of having an Excess Flow Valve in their service line. Customers must pay for the Installation and Maintenance of the Excess Flow Valve if one is requested. Contact Norgasco for more information if you would like an Excess Flow Valve installed and we will provide you with a cost estimate.
